Hawaiian
Falsetto singing is a form of musical expression unique to the
islands of Hawaii. There is no other style of singing that brings
with it such intense tropical passion and raw power.
Compiled by Michael Cord
and Harry B. Soria, Jr., this wonderful collection brings together
classic recordings by some of the most popular falsetto singers
from the 1940's through the 1960's.

Willie
& Amy… Dennis Pavao… the Ho`opi`i Brothers. If these are
some of your favorite artists, you might want to check out their
roots. Hana Ola records has released a very nice compilation with
twenty-two of Hawai`i’s best old school Falsetto singers. All
the old favorites are here, Lena Machado… Gabby Pahinui… Benny
Kalama… Joe Keawe and the queen of Falsetto… Genoa Keawe. A
lot of these recordings have been out of print, or on hard-to-find
78’s for many years now. Like Kona storms, it seems Falsetto
singing has had its beginings on the Big Island and spread
northward through the island chain, bringing with it the angelic
sounds that seem to decend from the heavens. Producer Harry B.
Soria has taken great care in putting together this anthology, and
is also responsible for the very informative liner notes [did you
know that in the 16th-18th century’s, they used castration for
men to sing the high parts in opera… yikes!] like I said very
informative liner notes! Some favorites include the great Lena
Machado’s ‘Kauoha Mai’, John Keawe Hawai`i’s beautiful
rendition of ‘My Yellow Ginger Lei’ and Linda Dela Cruz’s
use of circular breathing to hold the high note on ‘E Mama E’,
the same technique that Genoa Keawe has made famous through the
years. Genoa is also represented here with the song ‘Pupu A`O
Ni`ihau’. So if you have been looking for some old school
Hawaiian falsetto music, Legends of Falsetto might have what you
have been looking for. Jerry Byers - Maui Time Weekly
