Why?
No other state in the union has its own pet book. So why
Hawai'i?
Because we are a unique state in which to own a pet: unique in
climate, history, culture and attitude, and especially unique in
the way we live and interact with our pets.
No other state quarantines its dogs and cats (and no other state
is rabies free). No other state has 9-inch long centipedes,
stumpy-tailed felines, hallucinogenic toads, aggressive
mongooses, biting ants, bacteria-laden geckos, angry boars-at
least not all at once, all in the same garden. And though many
states have dangerous plants, Hawai'i has them in proliferation
and our warm weather means we are out among plant life, hiking
and playing with our animals perhaps more than pet owners
anywhere in the world.
And speaking of weather, our tropical climate lets fleas hatch
all year long, prompts cats to produce extra litters, and plays
dangerous tricks with bacteria and germs.
Like much of life here, living with a pet in these islands-whether it's an 'ilio (dog) or a popoki
(cat)-is an exciting adventure, an adventure for which this book
will help you prepare.
