Janice Crowl is a freelance writer and a master gardener with the Hawai‘i Island Master
Gardener Association, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Cooperative Extension Service. She has a
certificate in Landscape Horticulture from Merritt College in Oakland, California, and a bachelor of arts degree
in English from UH Mānoa. She has taught garden-based curricula to promote literacy, healthy nutrition, and
environmental stewardship through school gardens and community gardens in Hawai‘i and the San Francisco Bay
