Barefoot On Lava The Journals and Correspondence of Naturalist R.C.L. Perkins in Hawai‘i,
1892-1901
edited by Neal L. Evenhuis
List Price:
$29.95

The Hawaiian O‘o was last seen in 1934; the Hawaiian Mamo in 1898; the Black Mamo in 1907. Robert Cyril Layman Perkins
was one of the last to see these great Hawaiian forest birds alive when, at only 25 years of age, he was sent to the Hawaiian
Islands to survey the land animals (mainly birds, insects, and snails) for the Royal Society and the British Association for
the Advancement of Science in 1892. His exploits and the results of his explorations soon became legendary and remain today,
a foundation of knowledge for Hawaiian biologists. Despite his youth, he persevered over the frequent hardships of extreme
weather and rugged terrain.

Hawai‘i The Fires of Life Rebirth in Volcano Land
by Garrett A. Smathers, Ph.D. and Dieter Mueller-Dombois, Ph.D.
List Price:
$14.95

On November 14, 1959, Kilauea Iki – a small crater outside the east rim of Kilauea Volcano’s caldera – erupted and did so continuously for thirty
six days. At one point, the fire fountain reached a height of 1,900 feet, the highest volcanic eruption ever recorded in Hawai‘i. Lava layers
formed a "lake" as deep as 400 feet, burying a rain forest. Volcanic ash and lava destroyed a total area of 1,250 acres. This affected
area came to be known as "The Devastation Area".

Seeking the Sacred Raven Politics and Extinction on a Hawaiian Island
by Mark Jerome Walters
List Price:
$24.95
Usually ships in 72 hours
Will the ‘alala (Hawaiian Crow) ever return to the wild? A bird sacred to Hawaiians, a member of the raven family, and once
endemic only to Hawai‘i island, the ‘alala today survives only in captivity. How the species once flourished, how it has
been driven to near-extinction, and how people struggled to save it, is the gripping story of Seeking the Sacred Raven.
Trekking through Hawai‘i island’s rainforests high on Mauna Loa, talking with biologists, landowners, and government officials,
acclaimed author Mark Jerome Walters has woven an epic tale of missed opportunities and the best intentions gone awry.
From the ancient Polynesians who first settled the island, to Captain Cook in the 18th century, to would-be saviors of the ‘alala
in the 1990s, individuals with conflicting passions and priorities have shaped Hawai‘i and the fate of this dwindling cloud-forest
species.
