The Flower of Hawaii

The result is the first hardcover coffee-table book dedicated to the magnificent plumeria flowering tree. Author Alan Bunch’s first opportunity to visit the Aloha State came in the late 1980’s and he immediately became enamored with a funny-looking tree, with flowers growing on perches of tiny limbs whose aroma was intoxicating. After taking many photographs on that first visit, he would later become obsessed with plumeria after discovering through a co-worker, that they would grow in his home state of Florida. (more info)

Waikīkī, literally "spouting water", is the name of what was once a lush wetland area where three mountain streams met the Pacific Ocean. Under the care of Native Hawaiians, it was a place of rich, sustainable agriculture and aquaculture. With changes brought by Western settlement, Waikīkī was transformed into one of the most popular beachfront tourist destinations in the world. Ultimately, it is the authors’ hope that this book, through words and images, will help to ensure that Waikīkī’s past, both good and bad, remains a part of our collective memory. (more info)
