Waikiki: Images of Yesteryear

Waikiki
Images of Yesteryear

by Robert Thau and Robert Duren
List Price: $9.95
Usually ships in 72 hours

Given its glittering cityscape, it may be hard to believe that Waikiki – "spouting waters" – was once a sprawling marshland. Where mountain rains fell into streams that carried pure water to the sea, a rich, teeming, wetland sustained the ancient Hawaiians… Then in 1921, a controversial waterworks project commenced in Waikiki and by 1928, dredging had been completed for the Ala Wai Canal. Now, the life-giving waters were redirected and channelized and the expansive wetland became a thing of the past. Dredge spoil was used on both sides of the canal to reclaim hundreds upon hundreds of acres of land, opening Waikiki and the surrounding area to massive urbanization and development. However, Waikiki remains a place for relaxation and respite, and has become one of the world’s most famous travel destinations. Despite its changed landscape, Waikiki’s old charm lingers. Reminisce about Waikiki’s sentimental history through these images of its yesteryear. (more info)

Images of Waikiki

Images of America: Waikiki
by Kai White and Jim Kraus
List Price: $19.99
Usually ships in 72 hours

Waikiki, literally "spouting water", is the name of what was once a lush wetland area where three mountain streams met the Pacific Ocean. Under the care of Native Hawaiians, it was a place of rich, sustainable agriculture and aquaculture. With changes brought by Western settlement, Waikiki was transformed into one of the most popular beachfront tourist destinations in the world. Ultimately, it is the authors’ hope that this book, through words and images, will help to ensure that Waikiki’s past, both good and bad, remains a part of our collective memory. (more info)

Birds
Images of Hawai‘i's Feathered Heritage

by H. Douglas Pratt
List Price: $8.95
Usually ships in 72 hours

Like its people, Hawai‘i’s avifauna represents a heritage of successive immigration. The first birds to make the young volcanic islands their home were seabirds such as boobies, albatrosses, and terns. Eventually, migratory shorebirds and waterfowl that nest in the arctic began to spend their winters in Hawai‘i. Birds: Images of Hawai‘i’s Feathered Heritage showcases 48 full-color images of Hawai‘i’s unique birds such as the Nene, Apapane, Palila, Pueo, Iwa, and Elepaio. (more info)
