Over the years Patricia Lei Murray has been a practitioner of almost all the Hawaiian art forms including hula, featherwork, lauhala weaving, and koa woodwork. But her passion is quilting, both traditional and contemporary. An award-winning quilter, her work portraying the beauty of Hawai'i has been featured in quilt publications such as The Contemporary Hawaiian Quilt Book, and the newly released Honolulu Academy of Art's, HAWAIIAN QUILTS; Tradition and Transition, as well as calendars.
HAWAIIAN QUILT INSPIRATIONS; A Journal of Life is a collection of unique quilts and t4e stories that inspired their creation. It is a book to treasure and to share. In it she reveals the great golden kaula, the thread that binds Hawaiian thinking and values for living. She honors the early quilters who created quilts not only for warmth and as artistic objects of beauty, but to convey hidden messages. Often thousands of stitches later, with great Aloha, they would joyfully give the quilts away to bring beauty into the lives of others.
Formerly a Time Management consultant for Franklin Covey, and part-owner of Native Books and Beautiful Things, Patricia Lei now spends her time quilting, teaching, and writing. She recently completed a commissioned quilt dedicated to breast cancer patients at Kaiser Moanalua entitled The Healing Garden. Patricia Lei is also a video producer of two popular DVDs, Hula for Health and How to Hula. |

Patricia Lei and her husband, Harry, live in Alewa, Honolulu. They have five children-Harrison, Derek, Mark, Heather and Amber, who have all grown up and moved on. When the Murray 'ohana comes home, they celebrate with music, hula, laughter, and good food! And if they decide to stay, there's always enough quilts for everyone! Especially the nine grandchildren. |
