The ‘ukulele is not commonly thought of as a jazz solo instrument, but after hearing Benny Chong on "‘Ukulele Jazz", we
are sure you will agree that the ‘ukulele is every bit as sultry and moving as a saxophone or guitar.
The complexity and sophistication of Benny’s improvisations are evident throughout the CD, especially on the solo pieces where he
plays alone with no accompaniment, such as the beautiful "Ka Wailele O Nuuanu."
Award-winning composer and bass guitar virtuoso, Nathan Aweau, was "instrumental" in adding the funk and groove to this
album, arranging all ensemble pieces and accompanying Benny on the bass guitar.
Benny Chong taught himself to play the ‘ukulele at 11 years old, and has also been guitarist for the group the Alii’s and for Don
Ho.
"This CD project started out as a gift from Benny for his children and their children, but it is destined to become a
classic. He elevates ‘ukulele playing to new heights, thus raising the bar for all future ‘ukulele soloists. Thanks to Benny,
this humble instrument of folk origin will be taken a little more seriously from now on, and ‘ukulele playing will never be the
same."
