Na ‘Oiwi (Native Sons) is a new group consisting of notable local artists as Dennis Kamakahi, Mike Kaawa, David Kamakahi, and Jon Yamasato, each of whom are firmly established in the Hawaiian music scene and have a loyal following. While Dennis and Mike form the solid foundation of the group with their talent and experience, ukulele virtuoso, David Kamakahi (who has toured across the USA and Japan) and Jon Yamasato (original lead singer for the group “Pure Heart”) add the youthful dimension.

This new sound and concept presents a progressive Hawaiian beat with cross over appeal to both younger and older generations. With a blend of traditional and contemporary Hawaiian, Paniolo, and even a bit of Cajun, the CD features eight original compositions (never before recorded) by Dennis Kamakahi, one of Hawaii’s most prolific modern composers and two by Mike Kaawa, an accomplished 12-string rhythm guitarist, vocalist, arranger, and song writer in his own right.

“Crossroads” blends each artist’s unique talent and creativity and allows their individual energies to flow as this CD accentuates a new sound for today’s Hawaiian music. Hawaiian music tradition of the past is perpetuated through the younger generations as Na ‘Oiwi captures the musical styling and spirit of artists as Gabby Pahinui and Eddie Kamae & the Sons of Hawaii with a contemporary flair that is their own.
