There is perhaps no greater joy than the realization of your accomplished dream. Pihana is precisely
that for kumu hula Napua Greig. A devoted mother, sister, and daughter, she has evolved as a woman of strength
and beauty with the support of her beloved family and influence of her mother, Hulu Lindsey. As a dancer, Napua has trained under
the direction of kumu hula Hokulani Holt-Padilla, and graced the illustrious Merrie Monarch stage as an olapa for kumu hula Johnny
Lum Ho. In recent years she has distinguished herself as a kumu hula as well, of Maui’s own Halau Na Lei Kaumaka O Uka. Now with
this masterfully produced album, she joins the Hawaiian music industry with her peers and mentors as a truly gifted musician.
Pihana strives to pay homage to Napua’s traditional Hawaiian values while gently blending her own
contemporary tastes to create a unique style of music. This development of sound reflects the musical influences of her mother, her
kumu hula, and the journey of her own hula career. From her days as a dedicated dancer to her rigorous ‘uniki training to become
a kumu hula, the road to success has been filled with challenges she has met with poise and vigor. As a kumu hula, she has embraced her
passions for music and dance, coming full circle and returning to the Merrie Monarch stage with a newfound role, sound, and style to
present to the world. She has managed to maintain her traditional roots while also evolving as an individual, a kumu and an entertainer.
This harmonious balance between the old and the new was carefully crafted with the aid of Nā Hōkū hanohano award winning
producer Dave Tuciarrone, the creative mastermind who guided Napua through artful, exquisite arrangements on this 11 track
debut release. Loosely translated, Pihana, meaning "fulfilled" marks a celebration for Napua and is
a tribute to the arduous road she has traveled. To culminate these efforts, she sought the creative inspiration of her talented friends
and family to join her in creating an album which represents not only herself, but her invaluable ohana and halau.
With the release of her debut album Pihana, Napua Greig has successfully achieved her goals and found a true
sense of fulfillment. A manifestation of her own life experiences with love, life and family, this album honors her journey from hula
dancer, kumu hula, musician and back. It is her hope that you too will enjoy this musical odyssey with her.
