Makapuu Sand Band
Winds of Waimanalo
The Makapuu Sand Band’s second LP again emphasizes the group’s Hawaiian roots.
They give us crisp arrangements on acoustic guitar, slack key and string bass with strong vocals & Hawaiian lyrics
just as on their first album. They were unique and groundbreaking in the late 1970’s. Their vocals display a true
expression of love and joy for their musical roots and Hawaiian heritage. Iaukea Bright and Albert Kaai wrote five
new songs expressly for Winds of Waimanalo. A lost treasure newly found!
Classic Collector Series - Vol. 5
The Makapu'u Sand Band debuted their crisp arrangements on acoustic guitar,
slack key and string bass with strong vocals and Hawaiian lyrics in this, their first album. In the late 1970’s
these young native Hawaiian musicians had a unique sound of their own. Makapuu Sand Band was four cousins (one
calabash) consisting of Andrew Iaukea Bright, David Kawika Kamai, Joby Harris, and Albert Kaai. These four young
men from Waimanalo became interested in their Hawaiian heritage, and more specifically, in Hawaiian music, in
their early teens. The group had a modern acoustical sound that was popular with the youth of Hawaii in the 1970’s,
while at the same time they did not sacrifice the feel of traditional Hawaiian music.
