"Hana, the Heart of Hawai‘i," an
inside look at a place that many visit but few really
see…
There are many reasons why Maui is the most highly
visited Hawaiian Island: breathtaking landscapes, lush
jungle, the largest dormant volcanic crater in the world
and perhaps the most scenic road in the United States
just to name a few. But the surprising thing is that one
of the biggest draws on Maui is a place that nearly
everyone visits but only a few really see - the remote
town of Hana along the island's undeveloped east coast.
Hana, Maui is routinely called "one of the last Hawaiian
places," and for good reason. The fundamental elements
of Hawaiian culture are ever present in daily life here.
Hula is practiced regularly in one of the town's parks.
Outrigger canoes paddle in the Hana Bay. Traditional
thatched hales, or huts, can be seen all over town, one
of them a gathering place for the local fishermen's hui,
or club. "Hana, the Heart of Hawai‘i" captures a bit of
the aloha spirit of Hana in scenes told largely through
the words of Hana natives themselves.
Sweeping landscapes, evocative scenery and a mix of
Native Hawaiian music and contemporary score accent the
rich stories in this one-hour documentary.
