Local Boy - A Memoir Product Description:

Growing up local in the Hawaiian Islands, Fred Hemmings experienced Hawaii from the outside breaks of Oahu’s North Shore to the inner workings of state government. In Local Boy, the veteran waterman offers his own unique view of the islands – the big surf, the changing times and the memorable adventures with friend and role model Duke Kahanamoku.

Fred Hemmings is a Hawaiian waterman, renowned outrigger canoe steersman and international surfing champion who won the World Surfing Championships in 1968. He retired from competitive surfing and inaugurated the world’s first professional surfing events, including the Pipe Masters. In 1976, he co-founded International Professional Surfing, the world’s first pro surf tour. From 1984 to 1990, Hemmings was a Republican leader in the Hawaii State House of Representatives. In 2000 he was elected to the state senate, where he served as senate leader. A father and grandfather, he currently lives in Kailua, Oahu, with his wife Lydia, and his dogs. Hemmings is a keynote speaker specializing in Hawaii, surfing, and tales of Duke Kahanamoku.
